Technology. A fascinating invention which has completely changed our daily lives. It has made life so much easier. The way we communicate with each other is more accessible and convenient. The internet has added on to this, and the introduction of social media has made the world feel a lot smaller than it is. We are able to communicate with people from all around the world, at the tap of a button. It is truly wonderful, isn’t it?

Although there are countless benefits of technology and social media use, however, the amount of time we spend on our devices is alarming. On average, a person will touch their mobile device 2,617 times a day. And for extreme users, they can average over 5,400 touches a day.

For social media usage, in 2017, the average time spent on social media worldwide for the person was 135 minutes, up from 126 minutes in 2016. That’s just over two hours spent online. Add in the time spent touching mobile devices, let’s say a 3-second average to check time and notifications, it adds up to a whopping, that takes out the average to over 4 hours.

That means, we are spending 20% of our days on our devices, with 10% on social media. Teenagers on the other hand are spending one-third of their days using media, whether that be social media, music or videos. In fact, it is nearly nine hours on average.

Given we spend a significant amount of time on our devices and social media, what impact is this having on our relationships and wellbeing?

Research gathered suggests at least 24% of individuals think technology has either a negative or less-than-positive impact on their relationships. 42%report being distracted by their phones. 25% of married or partnered adults who text have texted their partner when they were both home together.

Ok so given we spend a lot of our lives on our devices and social media, shouldn’t we be more aware of what is going on in the world around us? Or are we simply ignoring it and clogging up our feeds with vines and memes, or updates from friends.

Because the world around us is changing, and there aren’t many who a) care, and b) are taking a stand.

Climate change is the biggest threat to humanity, and my personal dystopian view of us having to evacuate earth and seek refuge elsewhere in the galaxy. Both 2016 and 2017 have been recorded as the hottest years since the global records began. Scientists blame that humanity’s fossil fuel-burning is to blame, but what are we doing about it?

In fact, 17 of the hottest 18 hottest years recorded since 1850 have occurred since 2000. But rather than using social media as a thread to promote the real life dangers of our planet’s exist, we prefer to rage on about any of the trending vines or memes.

Those are just a few facts about what is happening in the world around of us.
